Highway 2, approximately two miles southeast of the Walton Ranger Station, is an exposed riverbank where mountain goats and other animals come to lick the mineral-laden cliffs. From the parking area, a short paved path leads to an observation stand overlooking the waters of the Middle Fork of the Flathead River.
What brings people to this spot is the hope of seeing mountain goats. Usually mountain goats prefer to stay on the rocky cliffs at much higher elevations.
In the south end of Glacier National Park, just east of Essex, lies a mineral deposit that the mountain goats find particularly delicious in the spring. The best time to see the goats is in the spring and you may even be rewarded by elk or other wildlife but more likely if you come at dusk.
